Designed and built entirely from black steel by New Format, these steel millwork units were a commission for Vancouver designers Port + Quarter.
Modelling the proposed pieces in 3D beforehand enabled the designers to consult with their client and ensure that the piece would satisfy their requirements for storage and function. This allowed them to see and approve the final product before a single piece of material was ordered. By pairing laser cut steel with traditional mortise and tenon joinery techniques, we were able to create a system that could be built in situ, in a historical loft building with limited access, and with a short installation time frame, in order to minimize disruption in the client’s home. This project was the basis for our Connect furniture series.
