Trans Am Totem

Vancouver artist Marcus Bowcott has long been known for his large format oil paintings.

So when he was invited to participate in the 2014 – 2016 Vancouver Biennale, he continued in this tradition of large scale work by creating a monolithic sculpture of five junkyard cars, with the pure white Trans Am on top, gracefully stacked above an old growth cedar. This piece was installed in downtown Vancouver as “Trans Am Totem.” The seemingly impossible sculpture relies on a hidden internal structure. Through the innovative use of heavy equipment, New Format worked with the artist to build the support armature, whilst also assisting in the creation of the piece through sculptural modification and composition of the vehicles and their components.
